What does it take to build a career in this new world? Digital careers are surging, and technological skills are expected. Employers are at least seeking foundational knowledge or the will to learn technological skills due to the rise in e-commerce, social media, cloud-based programs and online virtual meeting platforms. Forbes contributor, Joe McKendrick, reached out to experts and entrepreneurs to learn more about the skills and talents that will be in demand and to get a better idea of what it takes to build a career in this current landscape.

Joe suggests that we have jumped four years in technological innovation due to the Covid crisis. Contactless customer transactions and a contactless workplace became necessary overnight. Businesses are seeking individuals with the skills to maintain their digital environments. Furthermore, turn their digital capabilities into pleasant customer experiences and business growth. Whilst most entrepreneurs want someone who can code, it is still clear that customer relations are significant. Some have lost the ability to see that. John Mullen, president of Capgemini North America, observes that “young professionals unknowingly offend their clients by being too informal, by assuming they know what the client is thinking, and by not knowing what the client needs”. One role on the rise is a “head of innovation enablement” and “head of AI governance”.
John Mullen states that in terms of technological skills, the pandemic “showed a clear need for businesses to balance agility and resiliency-with the ability to scale operations in a secure and connected way”. John continues, “As the digital economy expands, I expect to see careers in cloud, cybersecurity services, product engineering, service innovation and digital technology flourish over the next five years”. Non-technical professionals should jump in and learn the skills necessary to work in our “tech-centric world”.
Businesses now know that the data collected from social media platforms are helpful in the development of their products and services. And that social media allows you to obtain a more considerable portion of the global market without leaving your workplace. As a consequence, jobs “will likely be deeply integrated with social media, content and the continues acceleration of the use of voice activation and IoT”. Kayla Eggenberg, director of PR and content strategy at Smith Kroeger, predicts.
Dr Michele Migliuolo is an executive director of the Center for Excellence in Entrepreneurship at Duquesne University. Michele elaborates that “we must not lose sight of the basics, and we must teach old-fashioned skills”.
2020 World Economic Forum findings
The 2020 World Economic Forum findings estimate that “by 2025, 85 million jobs may be displaced by a shift in the division of labour between humans and machines”. And that “97 million new roles may emerge that are more adapted to the new division of labour between humans, machines and algorithms.”
Top skill groups predicted to rise in the lead up to 2025 include:

- Skills in self-management such as active learning, resilience, stress tolerance and flexibility.
